Hi all Friends of Tideman Johnson!

I hope you’re enjoying this off-again-on-again summer we’re having. My tomatoes are confused but the weeds are growing like crazy!

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

Saturday August 28th, Johnson Creek Cleanup (map it) 9 a.m. – noon, followed by post-clean up party

Once again, we are partnering with the Overland Park Coalition to help clean up trash from Johnson Creek. Meet up at Mill Park (corner of Overland and Linwood ) between 8 and 9 am to sign up and pick the team you want to work on. There will be three teams in Tideman Johnson – two in the creek and one on the ground in the park itself. Bring gloves and boots that you don’t mind getting wet. After the clean-up, we’ll reconvene at Mill Park for the post-clean up party.

Friends of Tideman Johnson, First Saturday of the month, starting October 2nd, 9 a.m. – noon at Tideman Johnson Park (map it)

We have received another grant from the Community Watershed Stewardship Program so we can continue restoration efforts in Tideman Johnson Park. We’ll be focusing on areas in the woodland and along the Springwater Trail where so they’ll be ready for planting in the winter.

We’re looking forward to another good year in Tideman Johnson – we hope to see you out there!

Make sure your child is looking sharp when going back to school with a haircut and help support the Ardenwald Parent Teacher Organization.

The Ardenwald PTO is holding a back to school “Hair Cut-A-Thon” on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Ardenwald Elementary School (8950 S.E. 36th Ave. in Milwaukie) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tiffany Martin, Ardenwald PTO Secretary, and two other stylists from Salon Demara in downtown Milwaukie, will be donating their time providing the haircuts.

The haircuts are for children ages 13 and under. The cost is $10 per child and all proceeds go to Ardenwald PTO. No appointment is necessary, but please arrive by 3 p.m. to make sure you are on the list.

Event coordinator Jeff Davis has selected new bands with different music styles to perform. This year’s band line-up is:

  • Aug. 5, 2010-Tom Grant Trio
  • Aug. 12, 2010-Joe New and Friends
  • Aug. 19, 2010-Gravy
  • Aug. 26, 2010-Kolaku Hawaiian

The Neighborhood will also celebrate the National Night Out on Aug. 5, starting at 6 p.m. at Ardenwald Park.

Also new this year is a food vendor that will provide food and beverages for the concert goers.

Give Pizza a Chance, a food cart based in Portland, Ore., will be at the events, serving slices of artisan pizza and hand-made soda at the concert.

Designed to raise awareness of the abuse of prescription drugs, and to keep potentially dangerous drugs out of landfills and waterways, this event allow citizens to anonymously drop off unneeded or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal.

The event will be held Saturday, April 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Milwaukie Public Safety Building, 3200 SE Harrison Street, in Milwaukie.

Lisa Gunion-Rinker said that both families “were so touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity that they started crying.”

Matt Rinker, Jeff Davis and Chris Davis helped deliver the presents, including a queen-sized mattress and box spring, in the pouring rain.

Last year the Neighborhood Association had to deliver the presents in a foot and a half of snow.
