Ardenwald Holiday Potluck

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

img_potluck2009The monthly Ardenwald-Johnson Creek Neighborhood Association Holiday Potluck is coming up on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at the Ardenwald Elementary School (8950 S.E. 36th Ave., Milwaukie) in the cafeteria.

Every year the Neighborhood Association holds the Holiday Potluck party.  It’s a great time for residents and neighbors to get together and socialize with Neighborhood leaders and residents in a causal setting.

The holiday potluck is held in lieu of our regular neighborhood meeting.  The next regular neighborhood meeting is Tuesday, January 12, 2010.

Everyone is invited to attend the Holiday Potluck.  If you like to bring food or non-alcoholic beverages, please contact Lisa Gunion-Rinker at rinker@hevanet.com or call (503) 659-7807.

Regular neighborhood meetings are held on the second Tuesdays of each month, except in July and August. Pizza slices and soft beverages are provided at the regular neighborhood meetings.

Tips for keeping your ghouls and goblins safe this Halloween

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

img_davis_gy_skullTonight, children dressed in their favorite costume will roam the neighborhood tonight trick-or-treating or enjoying the performances at Davis Graveyard at S.E. Johnson Creek Boulevard and S.E. 43rd Avenue.

Everyone wants to have a safe and happy Halloween for themselves, their guests and their children. Using safety tips and common sense can help you make the most of your Halloween season and make it as enjoyable for your kids as it is for you!

Below are 13 simple tips courtesy from City of Portland’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement Crime Prevention to help make the festivities fun and safe for all.

Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to trick-or-treat on their own.

There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group.

Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it.

Take the long way ’round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots.

Try trick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.

Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.

Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.

Remember, shorter equals safer. Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them.

Don’t cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better.

Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with.

Say “no” to strangers. Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.

Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available.

Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy.

Volunteer help wanted for ‘Graveyard’ traffic control

img_davis_gy_skullFrom Arts Committee member Jeff Davis:

The Davis Graveyard Halloween Event on Saturday October 31st will be from 5:00 p.m.  to 11 p.m.   The Milwaukie High School Pony Prancers (“Graveyard Dancers”)  will be dancing to “Thriller” in the driveway throughout the evening.  They will be selling hot beverages and collecting donations across the street.

The street will be closed from SE 43rd Ave. and SE Johnson Creek Blvd. (JCB) to SE 43rd Ave. and SE Roswell St. during the event for the safety of the children that will be trick-or-treating and the adults.

For the past several years Milwaukie Police has allowed their cadets and reserves to volunteer for this event to monitor the roadblocks at both ends of the street.  This year there are fewer experienced cadets and less reserve officers that are available so they will not be able to monitor the road blocks.  It has been suggested that we find local neighbors to monitor the road blocks instead.   It has also been suggested that we ask if Portland Police or Clackamas County Sheriffs have anyone they could spare that night.  It is nice having some sort of police presence to keep any would be mischief from happening.

It looks like rain is forecast for Saturday so we can provide umbrellas and hot beverages.  Chris and I will be busy at the gates handing out candy to the hordes of children and managing the dancers so it would be nice to have some people dealing with the traffic at the road blocks.  Mainly just making sure people don’t try to turn into the street and letting people know to park around the corner on JCB in the business parking lots and walk back.
