The Johnson Creek Watershed Council (JCWC) announced they won $10,000 in an online contest to help fund the salmon habitat enhancements at the new Tacoma Street/Johnson Creek MAX station.
Earlier this month, Oregon Wildlife held an online contest on Facebook to vote for one of three wildlife-related projects. The contest winner receives a donation of $10,000 from Oregon Wildlife to help fund the winning project.
The voting closed on December 16.
JCWC won the contest with 457 votes. Willamette Riverkeeper’s Islands Paddle & Pull project came in close second with 442 votes. Wallowa Resources’ Aspen Restoration received 81 votes.
Matt Clark, executive director of JCWC said the contest was very close, “neck and neck until the very end.”
The funding will help pay for installing log jam habitat structures and excavating a side channel for the fishes, and the interpretive boardwalk.
Ardenwald-Johnson Creek (AJC) Neighborhood Association’s is actively involved in the boardwalk project.
AJC’s Creek Committee representative Russ Stoll said at the November 13, 2012 AJC regular neighborhood meeting that the Committee still needs to raise $150,000 to $250,000 by June 30, 2013 for the boardwalk project.
The Tacoma Street/Johnson Creek MAX station, including the future boardwalk, is in the AJC neighborhood boundaries within the Portland city limits.
