Low-cost opportunities are nigh for both Portlanders and Milwaukians to score some yard trees! Though the specifics differ between the two cities:
For Portland residents:
Portland Parks & Rec’s Urban Forestry can get you up to three free trees for your yard (but not for your curb strip), though you’ll have to arrange planting yourself. Get the details here.
For Milwaukie residents (order trees by 11/24!):
On December 13, Friends of Trees volunteers will gather at Water Tower Park (map it) before splitting into groups to plant neighborhood trees throughout the area. To get a tree and/or help plant them:
- Go to friendsoftrees.org/event-calendar
- Find and click the Milwaukie neighborhood planting event on Dec 13.
- And then:
- To purchase a tree to be planted at the event: Click the event’s HERE link and follow the steps for ordering trees. Trees are just $35 each, but orders must be received by Nov 24 and a street tree inspection by Friends of Trees staff is required.
- To sign up to plant trees at the 12/13 event: Click the event’s quick registration form link and follow the steps from there. No tree-planting experience is required; all training and tools are provided at the event.
