Group organizes rally to oppose Oak Grove Walmart

A rally will be held on Saturday, July 14 in opposition of opening a Walmart store in the Oak Grove area. The rally, organized by No Oak Grove Walmart (NOGWal), will take place at the former G.I. Joe’s store parking lot (15600 S.E. Mcloughlin Blvd.) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Rally participants are asked not to park in the former G.I. Joe’s parking lot. It is strongly recommended to take the TriMet 33-McLoughlin bus (transfer to the 33 bus at Milwaukie Transit Center, or park and board the 33 bus at the Southgate Park & Ride on S.E. Main St.).

In 2005, Ardenwald-Johnson Creek Neighborhood Association opposed a Walmart store for the former Goodwill site at S.E. McLoughlin Blvd. and south of S.E. Tenino St. viaduct, also known as the “Sellwood Walmart.” The Sellwood Walmart would have been within the Ardenwald-Johnson Creek boundary on the Portland side.

The Sellwood store development plans were later scrapped and the site is now being developed for a Portland-Milwaukie light rail station, due to open in late 2015.
